On behalf of the Congress Organizing and Scientific Committees, we are pleased to invite you to the Fourth International Congress on Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome. The meeting will be held in the Conference Center at Harvard Medical School on June 10-12, 2007 in Boston, Massachusetts. We are particularly excited to hold the meeting in Boston, as it was here that SDS was first described in 1964. We are fortunate to have Dr. David Nathan as our keynote speaker for this Congress. Dr. Nathan is a world-renowned hematologist noted for his work as both a clinician and as a scientist.

This meeting comes at an exciting time, as the recent discovery of the SBDS gene has paved the way for new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying this potentially life-threatening disorder. The 2007 Congress will focus on the latest research in the field, including sessions on blood cell production, leukemia, organ dysfunction, and novel therapies. The potential relationships between the different inherited marrow failure syndromes will also be explored.

The Congress has traditionally attracted the worldwide participation of expert clinicians and researchers from many different clinical and scientific disciplines. The meeting will provide opportunities for discussion, exchange of ideas, and workshops on a variety of topics.

The purpose of our conference is:
1. To provide a unique forum for discourse between researchers and clinicians with expertise in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome from different medical and scientific disciplines.
2. To provide a platform for the presentation and critical review of the newest research findings in this field.
3. To stimulate consideration of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome within the broader contexts of hematopoiesis, cancer predisposition, and organogenesis.
4. To attract new young investigators to the field and teach clinicians and researchers about the clinical and molecular aspects of this disorder.

We look forward to meeting you in Boston next June.

Sincerely,

Akiko Shimamura, M.D., Ph.D.           Richard J. Grand, M.D.
